Signs Your Pool Needs Repairs

Identify early signs of pool issues to prevent extensive repairs.

Detecting Leaks

A sudden drop in water level can indicate a leak. While evaporation causes some water loss, losing more than a quarter-inch daily may signal a problem. Inspect the surrounding area for wet spots and check equipment for visible leaks.

Conduct a simple bucket test to confirm a leak: fill a bucket with water, place it on the pool step, and mark water levels inside and outside the bucket. If the pool water drops more than the bucket’s, you might have a leak.

Equipment Malfunctions

Unusual noises from the pump or motor can indicate mechanical issues. Grinding sounds may suggest problems with the bearings or impeller. A decrease in water circulation might result from a clogged filter or malfunctioning pump.

Check the filter and skimmer baskets for blockages. If the issue persists, professional inspection is advised, as prolonged mechanical failures can lead to costly repairs or replacements.

Structural Cracks

Visible cracks in your pool's surface can worsen over time, leading to leaks or safety hazards. Small hairline cracks are common and often cosmetic, but wider cracks require attention. Examine the coping and tiles around the pool for damage as well.

If you notice gaps or shifting tiles, it's wise to consult a professional for an in-depth assessment. Early intervention can prevent extensive damage and costly repairs down the road.
